A law change was introduced in 2011 where the level of alcohol for drivers under 20 was reduced to a zero alcohol level. This initiative was introduced to improve the safety of New Zealand's young drivers and the general public.

If a young driver is found to have a breath alcohol level between zero and 150 micrograms per litre of breath they will receive an infringement notice with a $200 fee and 50 demerit points. So if they get caught twice their licence is suspended for three months due to demerits accumulation. Above that limit they will be dealt with by the courts.

It is very important that all under-20 drivers are aware of this legislation.
